原稿の内容 Why I Admire my Father My father is an important person to me, and to many people in Japanand around the world. He is a special dentist called a Super GP. For almost 30 years, he has treated people suffering from a disorder called Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMD. Have you heard of this disorder? Keio University Hospital estimates that 80 million people in Japan could have a problem like this disorder. Recently, TMD is one of the biggest issues with young people. TMD comes from problems with the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull. TMD problems happen when people clench or grind their teeth too tightly. This damages the joint. General dentists will fix this problem with medicine or massages. The pain will go away, but the problem may still be there. If the damage is serious or not treated correctly, the pain can cause depression. General dentists and hospitals will often overlook TMD as the cause of this depression, so the patients’ symptoms will get worse and worse. Even if hospitals know the cause is TMD, it can’t be easily fixed because general dentists don’t know how to treat severe TMD patients. In the last 40 years, my father is just one of about five dentists in Japan that specialize in TMD. Because my father’s dental office is in our home, I have seen the amazing effects of my father’s work firsthand. One patient was named Sandy. When she was in junior high school, she got braces, but her bite was not straight. Her bad bite caused TMD, and the TMD caused depression. Like many children with TMD depression, she stayed home from school. She didn’t finish high school, and never went to university. She only slept all day because of her pain. When she was 22 years old, her mother brought her to see my father. They traveled 10 hours from Fukushima. After one year of treatment, she was completely different. She smiled, and she talked a lot. She started attending night classes to finish high school. Since then, she graduated and now she works for a big company in Shizuoka. Sandy is just one patient out of hundreds that my father has helped. Because so many people suffer from TMD, and how much my father’s care makes a difference, I think I have a social responsibility to become a Super GP, like my father. To become a Super GP, my father studied dentistry in America. He went to an American University and Graduate school. He continues to use English every day. He talks with American dentists on the computer. And he reads English newsletters about TMD, too. To be like my father, I must study English very hard. After I graduate high school, I must study in America for 11 years to become an expert in TMD. So, in approximately 17 years from now, if you have jaw pain or a bad bite, please search for TMD Mao on Google. I’ll give you the best care, like my father. Thank you for listening. #高山市 #periomao #tmdmao
