FightCamp Trainers Tommy Duquette and Aaron Swenson demonstrate three ways of controlling distance in a boxing match. In fights, you need to learn how to adapt. Learning these controlling distance moves will help you dictate when exchanges happen and when they don’t. All three movements can be practiced on a sparring partner, while shadowboxing, or on a punching bag. Keep training and be the dictator for your GOALS! Distance Tip #1 - Weight Back Defense - Keep your weight on your back leg and step in and jam your opponent. Floyd Mayweather is known for keeping 80% of his weight on the back leg. When your weight is on the back, you have a lot of room to see what is coming at you, giving you more time to react, versus if you are in the middle, you won’t have a lot of space to see punches coming towards you. Distance Tip #2 - Outside Control - Using counter punches and moving will help with controlling outside distance. Roy Jones Jr. is famous for being an outside boxer. Make sure not to move backward in a straight line, back up, and then take an angle so you can control the center of the ring, maximizing the space that you have. Distance Tip #3 - Inside Control - If you know your opponent is a better outside fighter, then you need to be a better inside fighter. Adrian Granados is known for mastering inside control distance. For inside control, you want to get in on the inside and move forward so that you put your opponent on the ropes in the corner. By doing this it will allow you to cut off the ring for your opponent and keep them in the corner while you throw punches from there.
