EKG Tips!

EmpoweRN.com In the past I have received a lot of request for an EKG video, so here it is! I just want to note that this video may be more content heavy, however please just listen to the words & try to relax so that when you do go to class, you will be on your way to understanding the concepts and terms! I hope you enjoy it! So lets get started!! Here is a link to the book I used! I definitely recommend this book, it helped me a lot :) http://amzn.to/1sB1Y7z The basis for understanding the normal rhythm or electrical activity in the heart, is essential. So let me show you a systematic approach that I use, that helps me out a lot. This is the 5 step system. Step 1. Rhythm - is the rhythm Regular or Irregular Step 2. Rate is the rate normal or between 60-100 bpm? Step 3. P Wave? Is the P wave present? Step 4. PR Interval - A normal PR interval is between .12-.2 seconds AND Finally Step 5. QRS - is it normal or between 0.06-0.10 seconds I hope this helps!! xoxo! - Caroline Disclaimer: These videos are intended for entertainment purposes only. You need to refer to your own medical director, teachers and protocols for specific treatment information. It is your responsibility to know how best to treat your patient in your jurisdiction. It looks something like this: By counting the boxes from the R to R intervals using this formula: 300 - 150 - 100 - 75 - 60 - 50 The trick for accurately doing this is finding one R interval that is on a prominent line which represents 0.2 seconds. Then counting down to the next R interval Whichever number the R interval lands on will give you the approximate rate. For example I choose this R interval because it is close to the prominent line. Then I start counting down - 300 - 150 - 100 - 75 and you see how this is close to 60 so this rate would be around 60 beats per minute. The next step is - Is there a "P" Wave - Do you see a "P" wave before each QRS Complex? Step 4 What is the PR interval - Normally this interval is 0.12 to 0.20 seconds or 3 to 5 small boxes It is important to look at a few PR intervals for comparison. Lastly - is there a QRS Complex following each P wave & what is the measurement of the QRS Complex? A normal QRS Complex is between 0.06 to 0.12 seconds or 1.5 to 3 boxes!! So now that we understand normal - lets look at some Common Abnormal Cardiac Rhythms. So guys, I do hope you enjoyed this video, this is a complicated subject and there are many other rhythms, but it is a little challenging to show them all in one video. I will consider doing a another video showing more arrhythmias and also discussing clinical manifestations and medical managment.... if you guys are interested, so please let me know if you are by giving this video a "thumbs up" and posting a comment that you want to see more :) Also, just wanted to reinforce that if this subject matter is over your head, just stick with it, it took me a long time to understand it as well and just like you all, I'm learning new things every day :) Alright, I hope you enjoyed this & I cannot wait to see you again soon! I love you guys!! - Caroline
