Today we are using Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheet from his famous screenwriting book, Save The Cat, to understand the fundamentals of storytelling and explain the Iron Man movie in 15 beats. Check out the full playlist here:    • Write a movie script with me   Save The Cat has been the book that has impacted my screenwriting journey the most. The beats that we’ll walk through today can be found in the blockbuster movies that have made studios millions of dollars. I’ve heard it said that if you follow the structure described in this book, that you’ll end up with a hit movie. It’s only 15 steps and I’m going to walk you through them today. Rewind… Are you really guaranteed a hit movie? I’m sure we can all agree it’s a little more nuance than that, but needless to say, this book was my invitation into screenwriting when I didn’t even know where to start and I hope you get just as much out of the beats as I have. We’ll first walk through the 15 beats, and then we’re going to look at an example where we see the beats used in action. Here are the chapters that break down the beats. 00:00 Intro 00:45 Game Plan 00:53 15 Beats 02:00 Opening image 02:29 Theme stated 03:07 Set-up 04:09 Catalyst 04:48 Debate 05:21 Break into Act 2 05:47 B-story 06:17 Fun and games 07:15 Midpoint 07:48 Bad guys close in 08:44 All is lost 09:47 Dark night of the soul 10:12 Break into 3 10:38 Finale 11:03 Final image The Beat Sheet is the most used screenwriting book I own and every time I read it, I learn something new. Good luck with working through the beats for your story. We’ll address a new topic in the next episodes of this challenge. I’m looking forward to sharing that with you soon. Personally, I am passionate about screenwriting and movie scripts.
