PROCESS OF LAND ADJUDICATION AND TITLING BEGINS IN GARBATULA AREA OF ISIOLO.

Land owners in the old town of Garbatula in Isiolo County now have a major reason to smile, following the commencement of Land Adjudication and Titling process that will enable them obtain land ownership documents. The town which is the oldest in the region, having begun way ahead of Isiolo and Marsabit towns lacks even a single title deed, a situation that has deprived the locals of their compensation in the ongoing construction of the Horn of Africa Road that will connect Isiolo to Mandera through Garbatula and Modogashe towns. Yesterday, the Garbatula land owners converged and elected a 13-member land adjudication committee that will work with the team of surveyors from the Ministry of lands to ensure that all parcels of land are surveyed and land set aside for public utilities is also safeguarded. According to the Isiolo County CECM for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development Yusuf Dahir, the process of Survey kicks off today and will cover all parcels of land within a radius of five square Kilometers from Garbatula Town Central point. Dahir said that the process which is fully funded by the County Government of Isiolo is expected to go on for the next 21 days, with a target of surveying at least 7,000 parcels of land. He said that once the land in Garbatula town is surveyed and title deeds issued, a similar exercise will be conducted in the other towns like Kinna, Sericho and Merti, in order to enable land owners to acquire crucial land ownership documents. The County Land Adjudication and Settlement officer Japhet Mutiso said that the just elected 13-member committee will work closely with the team of surveyors from the ministry of lands headquarters in Nairobi to ensure that the exercise moves on smoothly, also helping in resolution of any existing disputes. He appealed to the members of public to cooperate with the officers on the ground for faster completion of the process. Area elders led by former chief Hajj Somo Roba and Duba Kara lauded the move by the County Government of Isiolo through efforts by Governor Abdi Guyo to partner with the National Government and kick start the process that will enable locals to acquire crucial land ownership documents. The elders however sounded a warning to politicians to desist from meddling in the process, citing the previous incident where efforts by the former Governor Mohamed Kuti to carry out the same exercise were met with opposition from other politicians who moved to court to stop the exercise, a move that ensured that land owners in the area remain without title deeds, missing out on compensation in the ongoing construction of the Horn of Africa Road as a result. Hajj Somo noted that it was a shame that Garbatula town which begun at least 12 years before Isiolo town remains without even a single title deed, with recent towns like Ngaremara and Oldonyiro already have the land ownership documents.
