Opie’s Museum of Memories at Wigan Pier

If you went to Wigan Pier back in the year 2000, you got two museums for the price of one – ‘The Way We Were’ and ‘Opie’s Museum of Memories’. Based on the collection of archive popular culture and product packaging accumulated by folklorist Robert Opie, the Museum of Memories recreated each decade of the 20th Century. Visitors found themselves transported back to childhood through the trigger of toys, games, sweets, food and popular culture. The Museum of Memories opened in 1999 and, like The Way We Were, featured daily performances by the actors of Wigan Pier Theatre Company. Tradition Films were asked to record visitor’s reactions to the Museum of Memories, and the edited result won ‘best film’ at the prestigious Lymm Film Festival in 2002. Sadly the Museum closed in 2005 as part of the Trencherfield Mill/Wigan Pier Quarter redevelopment. Robert Opie’s collection is now on display at the Museum of Brands in London. More information about Tradition Films can be found at http://www.traditionfilms.co.uk Wigan now has the Museum of Wigan Life https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Resident/Mus...
