Almost 4 years to the date, Chris took his first unassisted steps with a walker in therapy. Chris was unaware that he was doing so as he has no sensation below his chest! He sustained a SCI on May 2, 2020 after being hit by a truck while riding his motorcycle. He has a C5 injury, with motor sparing, which means he has some function of his lower body, but no sensation. He says it feels like balancing himself on top of a bowl of jello. His braces have what is called a dorsiflexion assist, a spring-loaded hinge that lifts his foot so he doesn't catch his toes and trip. Prior to this, Chris has always had his PT or PTA holding onto his belt.
