Notes： At some point in the stories (I think it might’ve been The Hound of the Baskervilles) Holmes calls Watson a “conductor of light”. The song’s title, translated into English is “One Who Chases The Light”, about a certain kind of love where a person is happy to be “illuminated” by the person they love, even if it’s only for a short while. I had at first intended to make the FMV from Watson’s POV, he being the shadow always at Holmes’s side, following after him whenever he can, and insisting on following him even when he can’t. But the more I thought about the words “conductor of light” the more I realized that as much as Holmes is Watson’s light, Watson is Holmes’s light to, perhaps, an even higher degree. I think it was Jeremy Brett that said that Holmes needs Watson even more than Watson needs Holmes. That is true, but Watson stays by his side steadfastly all the way through (and doesn’t even abandon him for a wife, in this version!) Their relationship, however you want to interpret it (whether platonic, brotherly, romantic), is very strong and very mutual. Holmes burns blindingly brightly, and burns out quickly. I think that it’s Holmes’s light that Watson is conducting, and glowing right back at him with a sustaining love.
