In this episode set in the summer of 1894, Holmes and Watson are on their way to Calcutta on board the steamship Lucifer to investigate the case of the White Elephant. 22. (0:30:38) “The Fifth of November (The Gunpowder Plot)” – Starring: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Harry Bartell (announcer) – November 5, 1945. In England, November 5th is known as Guy Fawkes Day after the chief conspirator in the gunpowder plot to blow up the houses of parliament. In this episode Dr. Watson tells the tale of a very unusual adventure he had with Sherlock Holmes on the 5th of November many years ago. 23. (1:01:10) “The Speckled Band” – Starring: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Harry Bartell (announcer) – November 12, 1945. 24. In this episode, Dr. Watson recounts an adventure, which took place in a gambling casino in the South of France. 25. In this episode set in 1895, Holmes had just concluded his investigation of the sudden death of Cardinal Tusker and Holmes and Watson are taking a couple of weeks rest at Stratford-Upon-Avon. The first week was calm and peaceful and it wasn’t until the following Tuesday that the troubles began. While walking through the Forest of Avon, a shot fires and a bullet hits Sherlock Holmes in the shoulder. –––––––––––––––––––– The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a radio drama series which aired in the USA from 1939 to 1950. The show ran for 374 episodes, with many episodes now considered lost media. The series was based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and was billed in different listings under various titles including Sherlock Holmes, and Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. The most popularly remembered title is The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. For most of the show’s run, the program starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, together they starred in 220 episodes. Other actors played Holmes and Watson in later seasons. The show first aired on the NBC Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. The program aired on ABC instead of Mutual for its sixth and ninth seasons. From 1939 until 1943, episodes were adapted or written by Edith Meiser who had written the earlier series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which aired from 1930 to 1935. From 1943 onward, most episodes were written by the team of Denis Green and Anthony Boucher with some early episodes written by Green and Leslie Charteris. Edith Meiser returned to write for the show for its seventh season. Max Ehrlich and Howard Merrill wrote the episodes of season 8.
