House in the Form of Staggered Blocks Rising Along the Mountainside

Located in Clifton, South Africa, the Kloof 145 residence, designed by the renowned South African architectural firm SAOTA, offers a unique experience in communion with the lush nature that surrounds it. Accessed from the winding Kloof Road, the property is set on a steep terrain, blending seamlessly with the western slopes of Lion's Head and offering spectacular views of golden sandy beaches, rock outcrops, and the majestic Twelve Apostles Mountains to the south, along with enchanting sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean. The conceptual design approach sought to recreate the qualities of a natural landscape, using elements that harmoniously integrate into the hillside. The residence is composed of staggered blocks that rise along the mountainside, providing private upper levels shielded from street-level visibility and noise. At the lower level, there is an independent apartment, expressed as a "massive stone plinth," with gabion walls and a cozy interior of dark-stained oak and exposed concrete that reflect the layers of the mountainous terrain from which they emerge. A notable highlight is the vertically slatted box suspended over the terrace, allowing forest bushwillow trees to grow up to this level, with screens that can be opened or closed to adjust the amount of natural light that penetrates the interior, providing a feeling of being under the shade of a leafy tree. The structure, made of durable and lightweight aluminum, features a finish that mimics the various tones of tree bark, a resilient solution to withstand the unpredictable seasons of Cape Town. On the living level, strategically set back to follow the mountain's incline, there is a mountain-facing patio that allows for ventilation, lighting, and landscaping opportunities. The emphasis on natural materiality is evident in the concrete ceiling with rough-sawn planks and in the wooden floors and wooden-clad pantry. The pantry serves as the base for a private study on the mezzanine, accessed by a bridge that spans the length of the room. The top level houses the master bedroom, positioned above the treetops, where materials such as white marble and light wood, combined with skylights, promote a feeling of lightness and openness, while the fold-away glass walls allow for a full view of the surroundings. In summary, the Kloof 145 residence is an elegant and intelligent fusion of contemporary architecture and stunning nature, offering a unique living experience in a truly paradisiacal setting.
