As an educator on everything related to the fig, I get this question all the time. “Why aren’t my figs ripening?" Believe it or not, your figs are probably ripening. You just don’t know it. But what about tricks that I might know to help speed up their ripening process? After all, that’s mainly why we’re growing fig trees. For the amazing eating experience, figs can offer. Introduction (00:00): Addressing a common question about why figs are not ripening as the fig season approaches its end. Ripening Misunderstanding (00:35): Many figs do ripen, but people might not understand the ripening process. Stages of Fig Growth (01:14): Description of different growth stages of a fig - from formation, growth stagnation, to the final ripening stage. Importance of Temperature (02:30): Figs' ripening can be affected by soil temperature. A colder environment can delay the normal 30-day stagnation period. Metabolism Analogy (03:06): Just as humans' metabolisms are influenced by internal temperature, figs' metabolisms are controlled by soil temperature. The optimal soil temperature is around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Tips for Earlier Ripening (03:40): Suggestions include moving figs to warmer locations, ensuring adequate sunlight, and planting fig trees in warmer spots like the south, west, or southwest corner of a property. Selecting the Right Variety (04:54): Growing earlier ripening varieties can help. Some varieties might take 90 days to ripen, while others might only take 65 or 70 days.
