On June 14-15, 1969, GT40 P/1075, in Gulf Livery, won the 24 Hours of LeMans, becoming the only two time GT40 LeMans winner. The Porsche factory team came finished a very close second, just 120 meters behind the GT40 that won for the second year in a row. As a sidebar, unlike the GT40 MK II that first won LeMans in 1966, P/1075 is a MK I with a 302 cubic inch, small block V8 instead of the monster 427 FE Side-Oiler in the MK II. This ABC Wild World of Sports video was fed live from LeMans France back to the US, and remains one of the first live satellite transmissions of an international sporting event. Keith Jackson and Chris Economaki narrate, complete with sponsorship billboards. The helicopter shots are shaky at best, but that was the best tech available at the time (Steadicams weren't invented yet.) As a former ABC Wild World of Sports cameraman, I can attest to the skill required in the days of “steam powered” television. Today, P/1075 is curated as part of a collection owned by a very well-known collector. Current value of P/1075 is in excess of $40 million US. Note that the last portion of the race is the most exciting as the GT40 and Porsche duel for lead, exchanging it several times on the last two laps. Enjoy!
