College Recruiting Tips for High School Swimmers

If you are a high school swimmer wanting to swim at the collegiate level, here are 10 tips I want to give you when you are going through this process! Recruiting can be stressful, but the most important thing is to stay relaxed and tell yourself it will all work out at the end. NCAA has a dead period due to the coronavirus until April 15, 2020. So you are not allowed to contact coaches at this time. 1. Find a program right for you. There are plenty of programs out there in the United States and make sure you explore all your options. 2. Stay in your lane, Focus on YOUR process, not others. 3. Ask Questions. Do some research about the school's academics and athletics and make sure to address them when you call the recruiting coach. 4. Trust Your Gut. If something does not feel right, trust your instinct and find somewhere that'll make you happy. 5. Do Your Research. Compare your times with the swim team's current roster's time, look at the school programs they have to offer and see what you want to study in college. 6. Be Realistic. When you compare times, see what is possible and your ability to hit those times. But, it never hurts to reach out to college coaches, the worst case is: No, so REACH OUT! 7. Assess your goals and the college team goals. Pull some of the coach's training and meet philosophies and see if they are aligned with yours. 8. Scholarships are NOT personal. There are limited scholarships in the swimming world and coaches want you to be on their team they are building. 9. Don't let fancy "Things" distract you. Focus on the overall environment that will make you want to study and swim at that school. 10. Be Honest. If you really don't want to go to a school, tell the coach and you'll save both your time as well as the coaches' time.
