Théodore Salomé | Cantilène

• Gert Ronner plays «Cantilène» taken from the first volume of "Dix Pièces", composed by Théodore Salomé on the 1894 Anneessens organ at the Church of Saint Adalbert in Haarlem, the Netherlands. • Theodore-César Salomé was a French composer, tutor and organist. Born in Paris, 1834, he served as a longtime colleague of Alexandre Guilmant at the church of Ste.Trinité, where he played the small choir organ. As a personal friend of Guilmant, he substituted when the latter was on one of his many concert tours. Salomé himself never aspired the life of a recitalist, but rather worked as a tutor and liturgical organist. Such established composers as Saint-Saëns, Bizet and Gounod spoke highly of his artistic qualities. Salomé wrote over 500 pages of organ music, but also a considerable amount of piano and vocal works, none of which hold repertory today. He passed away in 1896, in the suburb of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. This «Cantilène» was first published without a title as Nº9 from «Dix Pièces» in the early 1870s by Leduc. Written entirely in the style of the Second Empire, it features an expressive Hautbois solo and a middle section played on the Voix Céleste. • The 1894 Anneessens organ at the church of Saint Adalbert in Haarlem is a typical example of 19th century organ building. The organ has a homogeneous sound palette, resembling the sounds of a symphonic orchestra, which in turn inspired many composers to compose for this new type of organ from the early 1860's and onwards. This particular instrument uses quite a peculiar action of combined trackers and pneumatics and is in a pretty bad state. The sound however is, as you can hear, quite lovely.
