Building a Lineman: Feet on the Ground

Playing with Your Feet on the Ground is one of the core essentials of offensive line play. In this video I discuss how an Offensive Lineman's feet connected to the ground is the key to access all of their power. To maximize power, balance, & leverage an Offensive Lineman must keep their entire foot on the ground as much as possible. To be more accurate, they need to play on the insoles of their feet!. The connection between the big toe and the heel contacting the ground activates the entire chain of muscles up to the glute. When moving forward the weight is on the big toe, but the heel must remain on the ground. If the chain gets broken, the lineman loses power. Inversely, when moving backwards (like in pass protection) the weight is back on the heel, but the big toe remains connected to the ground. If the toe comes off the ground, the weight is shifted backwards and they lose the ability to brace against the defender. I like to start OL drills by instructing Offensive Linemen to take off their shoes and complete the drills in their socks. This way they can feel when they have contact with the ground and access to their power. Stay tuned for drills for Offensive Linemen in their socks!
