Nissan X-Trail Review: Big On Space The Nissan X-Trail is the brand's largest SUV offering, slotting above the popular Qashqai in size and practicality. While it doesn't bring massive thrills behind the wheel, the X-Trail makes a compelling family hauler with plenty of space, a well-appointed interior, and decent efficiency from its hybrid powertrains. Chunky Exterior, Premium Interior Vibes The X-Trail wears an aggressive exterior design with plastic cladding and skid plates giving it a rugged look. The styling is fairly conventional for a midsize SUV, but the chrome accents and LED lighting keep it from looking too bland. Inside, the X-Trail punches above its price point with a modern layout and an available 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Higher trims get a classy tan leather interior that really elevates the cabin ambiance. While there are some cheap plastic surfaces, the overall build quality is robust, and the X-Trail offers a good number of creature comforts like heated seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, and more. The infotainment system is user-friendly as well, with wireless Apple CarPlay integration. Spacious But Lacking Carpool Capability One of the X-Trail's biggest strengths is interior space – there's plenty of room for four or five adults to get comfortable. However, if you opt for the third row, legroom and headroom get very tight back there. The third row is really only suitable for smaller kids on short trips. With all the rear seats folded, the X-Trail opens up a maximum of 1,424 liters of cargo space. That's less than rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, which offers over 2,000 L. But for most families, the X-Trail will have enough room for strollers, luggage, and gear. Hybrid Power With Quirks The X-Trail lineup includes a turbocharged 1.5-liter gas engine, either in mild-hybrid or full hybrid form. The regular petrol engine gets quite raucous when pushed hard, though it settles down at cruising speeds. The hybrid variants use the gas engine as a generator to power an electric motor, improving efficiency in city driving. However, the hybrid powertrains still get noisy under hard acceleration. The 204 horsepower hybrid returns up to 47 mpg, while adding the e-4orce all-wheel-drive system drops that to 44 mpg. Not stellar for a midsize hybrid SUV. An EV mode provides brief electric driving, but overall the hybrids are more complex than a traditional gas-electric setup. Comfort Over Dynamics Where the X-Trail truly shines is ride quality. The suspension soaks up bumps with ease, making for a serene driving experience, aided by good sound insulation at highway speeds. The light steering is a bit numb but makes the X-Trail easy to maneuver around town and in parking lots. Don't expect any sporty handling dynamics though. While the X-Trail maintains its composure respectably in corners, there's noticeable body roll, and the steering feels disconnected when driving spiritedly. But that's not really the point with this family-focused SUV. Overall, the X-Trail delivers a smooth, comfortable driving experience aligned with its mission. The Verdict: Solid Family Transportation The 2024 Nissan X-Trail doesn't dazzle in any particular area, but it does most things pretty well. It's a spacious, well-equipped, and relatively affordable midsize SUV that puts an emphasis on comfortable transportation for families.
