June 9/2024. Here's a good example why busking (in the true definition of the word) no longer works. Watch this woman film me. Seems great, yes? But is it? You say "But isn't it great to be appreciated and filmed?" Tell me, do you do your job for free because your boss appreciates you? Is appreciation enough to live on? I don't know a single busker who says "I only want to be filmed by pedestrians. That's why I do it." Buskers are out there to make money. I have shown here that ticking all the boxes to get a tip, and encourage a tip, doesn't always work. People either don't want to pay, or like this woman, have no money. Even the QR code sign for online tips doesn't work. This woman opens her wallet and then walks away. She could’ve easily used my QR code tip. She could’ve easily taken a business card and tipped later or she could’ve at least apologized. I see this more and more. People want photos with me, sometimes large groups of 5 all posing, they film me for five minutes. They don’t tip, or at best I get a quarter thrown in my case. When I point to my tip case after people stand there filming or posing next to me, they make lame excuses. Some film me from a distance, I walk up to them to give them a good closeup, and they run in fear or pretend that they were not filming me! "Oh, no! He wants a tip!" Imagine that. A busker who expects a tip after you stand there filming for five minutes. Here are the facts. if you are filming me and trying to do it while hiding behind a pillar, you freaking know that you’re hiding and that you should be tipping. You are purposely staying out of my sight so that you can make video. It’s the same with those who walk past me holding their cameras down low on the side to film me while they walk past. I see you. When I walk up to you while you’re filming, don’t turn around and pretend like you weren’t filming me. Just say “Sorry, I’m a tourist that has no money.” At least then I’ll have a good laugh. Seriously, what the fuck? Busking is hard enough to get any attention when 99% don’t give a shit about live music anymore. These people can just keep walking, but when you get somebody who’s actually lured in and you still don’t get a tip, it gets to be a bit ridiculous. If you like what you are seeing and hearing enough to stand there filming it, tip the busker. It’s basic common sense and courtesy. All you morons in the comment section talking about “There is no obligation to tip” and “there’s no legal contract”. It’s a social contract. No one in their right mind looks at a busker and says “I don’t need to tip this guy. I’m sure he’s loaded with cash.” You’ve all shown how you don’t give a shit about buskers or live music and don’t want to tip.
