Meghanaad is the eldest son of Ravana,the king of Lanka & Mandodari.His cry after birth was like a thunder,hence he was named Meghanaad.Ravana wanted his son to be extremely talented,stronger and become a great warrior.Inorder to get the planets in his favorable position,he threatened them.All the planets except shani obeyed Ravana order and came in one position. i.e 11th place.Shani was in 12th position,which destined Meghanaad’s death at the very young age. Ravana was very furious and captured all the planets. Meghanaad under his Guru Sukracharya’s guidance became well talented,skillful and mighty warrior. Ravana was very happy with his son. Meghanaad is the only one person in this world who possess all the weapons of devas,asuras and trimurthis. The trimurti weapons are possessed by only Hanuman,Parashuram and Meghanaad. Meghanaad has conquered entire world and won over the devas as well. He captured Indra, the king of devas and was about to kill him in Lanka .Lord Brahma intervened and asked Meghanaad to leave Indra. Meghanaad obliged his request. For which Brahma offered a boon.Meghanaad requested for immoratlity which was denied by Brahma as its against the law of nature. Hence Meghanaad asked that he should always won a battle before which he performs yagna to their family diety Nikumbula devi.He was granted the boon but warned that a person who could the destroy the yagna would eventually kill him. Also Lord Brahma named Meghanaad as IndraJit(As he won over Indra). Indrajit was married to Sulochana the daughter of serpent King. Indrajit is a great devotee of Lord Shiva.He is the prince of Lanka.Meghanaad was represented twice in the Ramayana. Once when he fights Hanuman and captures him(During Hanuman’s visit to lanka in search of Sita Mata). Next in the war between Ram and Ravana. Next Meghanaad enters the battle after his brothers,cousin,uncle kumbhakarna’s death. He fights Rama and Lakshman and was able to defeat them twice. Meghanaad used all his powers and was invisible and visible alternatively to confuse the warriors. He killed almost half of monkey army on the first day of his war.And he used his Nagaastra on Rama and Lakshman. But they were survived by the timely help of Garuda,who is the friend of Hanuman and also the escort of Lord Vishnu(Incarnated as Rama). The next day, Meghanaad fought more fiercefully with Lakshman and made him fell unconscious. Lakshman would have died before the dawn of next day due to the poise of the weapon Meghanaad used.This time, Hanuman helped him to bring the doctor,Suseshana from lanka along with his house and learnt of Sanjeevini from him. Hanuman flew from Lanka to Himalayas over night and brought the entire dronagiri as he could not recognise sanjeevini. Lakshman was treated by sushena and survived. All this happened on the second day of war with Meghanaad. Meghanaad who learnt about Lakshmana’s survival decided to perform the yagna to his family diety, so could win this war. But Vibhishana learnt about Meghanaad’s plans and informed Ram that he would become invincible once the yagna is completed. Ram ordered Lakshman to destroy the yagna. Vibhishana revealed along the secrets and path to the way. Lakshmana destroyed the yagna and called Meghanaad for battle. Meghanaad said it is not right to fight with a person who is unarmed. But Lakshman wouldn’t listen to him. Then Meghanaad accused his uncle Vibhishana for revealing all the secrets to enemies. Meghanaad fought very fiercefully with Lakshman. Both used many astras and weapons in which they gained and failed over each other. Meghanaad used trimurti weapons and they didnt harm Lakshman. Meghanaad then realised that Lakshman is not ordinary person. Its told like his soul went to visit Ravana and tried to convince him to stop battle, for which Ravana couldn’t accept and shouted back on his son for being coward. So Meghanaad accepted his fate and then was killed by Lakshmana with the help of Hanuman and Vihishana. Meghanaad was beheaded with a arrow. Rama passed his orders to return the body of Meghanaad to perform respectful funeral rights in lanka. Meghanaad died on his third day of war. His wife Sulochana who loves her husband the most, performed sati.
