While a lot of folks believe / feel / hear that EMG pickups can sound sterile, we did not feel this while doing our P pickup demos. Our general feeling is that they sound pretty full range. A bit of a scooped mid range can be heard, and this is no doubt a tone that is very appealing to many players. As always, keep in mind that these are generalizations.
