USS Spiegel Grove Wreck Dives off the Florida Keys 8 2023

Enjoy a video of a double drop on the USS Spiegel Grove wreck off the Florida Keys. We had to pass on diving the USCG Cutter Duane due to strong current. On the Spiegel, we had very little current and the viz was good. There was a Reef Shark with a hook in its mouth patrolling close on the wreck. Poor guy/gal! We had fun with a number of swim throughs. The USS Spiegel Grove (LSD-32) was a Thomaston-class dock landing ship of the United States Navy. The USS Spiegel Grove served in many missions transporting troops to the Mediterranean, to Labrador and to other locations. From 1956 to its decommissioning in 1989, the Spiegel Grove helped enforce America's Cold War strategy of containment, which called for rushing troops and equipment to support friendly governments. The Spiegel Grove is located on Dixie Shoal, 6 miles off the Florida Keys in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Almost immediately after the sinking, the ship began to attract marine life from large groupers to schools of shimmering smaller fish and colorful tropical fish. Marine scientists expect natural corals to eventually envelop the Spiegel Grove. For a scuba diver, this ship is 510 feet long and 84 feet wide; it is said that one can dive this wreck 100 times and still never see the entire thing. Her top deck is about 60 feet below the water's surface. The vessel's hull, which is a labyrinth inside, is as much as 135 feet under water, and silt can get kicked up and reduce visibility inside to almost zero, which can cause disorientation. There have been (10) ten recorded diver deaths while diving the Spiegel since 2003. Some divers died from a medical condition after surfacing. A few divers were found unresponsive during their dives. One diver made it to the surface after running out of air but drowned. On two occasions, a group of three divers and later a single diver all died while attempting a penetration dive inside the remains of Spiegel Grove.
