The themes of this film surround the impressionist quote: “I have never painted the sun. I have only painted what it made me feel.” Filmed in the heart of Paris at Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, the context of this impressionist quote will be challenged and explored with regard to the art of dance. Dance as an art form can transcend the impressionist-imposed division between reality and perception, that there exists an either-or relationship between witnessing a truth and experiencing a mere impression of it. In the world of dance, these two dichotomies exist on the same plane. Dancing the impression– exhibiting the abstract– is regarded as ringing true to the nature of dance and spectacle. On the other hand, dancing the reality– exhibiting the mundane and literal– is seen as displaying an impression of dance itself. This irony of art, as showcased in the film, empowers the spectator to ask themselves: what it made me feel.
