The Trick That Fooled Houdini

A new presentation for a classic trick. I've been playing around with this format to great reactions so far! Some thoughts: I always felt that the ambitious card plot, as in most tricks that require repetition, has a potential pitfall, which is that the spectator can start to feel like you're hitting them over the head over and over, and shift from being amazed to feeling frustrated. My hope is that using their card to illustrate a story takes enough of the "sting" out that they can enjoy the wonder of it without feeling like I'm making a fool of them repeatedly. But just listening to a story becomes boring and detached; I think that the hook of the one trick that fooled Houdini is juicy enough (especially because I make a big deal about the fact that it is the absolute truth, and encourage them to confirm it when they get home!) to pull them in emotionally. But that's not enough, it needs to transcend the story and become personal and individual. The beauty of it is that I love the CTW finale for ACR but it always felt a little slapped on; this gives me the perfect excuse to transition from "story" mode to "now this is happening for you" mode, and leave them with a memento and a mystery… Let me know what you think, and if you've ever used this particular hook to frame your ACR…
