Annually, thousands of devotees participate in the Amarnath Yatra, which takes place between the months of June and August. This spiritual journey is organised by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. This year, the yatra will commence on june 29 2024, and will culminate on August 19 2024 . The yatra will commence simultaneously for both routes — the Pahalgam track in the Anantnag district and Baltal in the Ganderbal district. The yatra is undertaken to visit Amarnath Cave, which is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites among Hindus. Located at a height of 3,888 metres in Srinagar, it is considered to be one of the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva. This is the only time in the year when the Amarnath Cave is accessible. The Yatra takes place during Shravani Mela, which falls in the Shravan month, according to the Hindu calendar. However, other epics tell a different story. Both routes provide campsites with basic amenities for pilgrims. For registration, pilgrims must have a valid Compulsory Health Certificate issued after April 8th, 2024, and a government-recognized ID. The registration fee is Rs 150 per person, and it can be done through designated bank branches or online via the official website of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. An essential part of the Yatra is the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card, which ensures the safety and tracking of pilgrims. It must be collected from designated centers in Jammu and Kashmir before starting the journey. Without a valid RFID card, pilgrims will not be allowed to cross the entry control gates at Domel/Chandanwari. Accommodation options at Pahalgam and Baltal range from guesthouses and lodges to budget hotels, catering to various needs and preferences. Pre-fabricated huts are also available for overnight stays, provided by private contractors through the Shrine Board, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Amarnath Yatra is not just a journey to a holy shrine but a journey within, offering a chance for spiritual reflection and renewal amidst the majestic Himalayas.
