To discover that it was created by Magic: The Gathering designer Richard Garfield but also feature an awesome Japanese Kaiju theme, there was something immensely appealing about a game that had you throwing big dice. Think of Yahtzee melded with Jurassic Park! The level of innovation when it game to pressing your luck and using the dice to gain the actions you wanted was part of such simple yet intuitive gameplay.
