As Strawberry recalls, while he and Gooden became well-established and successful major league baseball players, the secret to winning the 1986 World Series was not the sum of the players' skills but largely due to the right team chemistry. The Mets' rivalry with the Cardinals, who beat them in 1985, fueled a desire to excel in 1986, and they ended up dominating the entire season, culminating in a World Series victory against the Boston Red Sox.
