Duster live at The Danforth Music Hall, Toronto, Canada; 28 March, 2024

I found myself at a Duster & Codeine show under somewhat curious circumstances. The venerable Codeine are currently on tour, affording me the opportunity to finally witness the majestic spectacle with my own two eyes. On this night, they were opening for Duster, who are clearly having a moment via TikTok. Now, twenty-five years ago I would have loved the shit out of Duster. Theirs is a sound that blends space rock and slowcore through the distressed filter of lofi indie rock. But the world was simpler back then and you either read about a band or heard about it through friends and I didn't. So when Duster went on a 20 year hiatus, I was none the wiser. I came across the re-issue of the band's discography as the box set "Capsule Losing Contact" in 2019 and have thoroughly enjoyed both old and new sounds over these past 5 years. So when this show was originally announced, I impulsively bought a ticket and I resolved to sort out considerable travel logistics at some point down the road. There has been considerable debate over the relative merits of TikTok fame among us old farts given its arbitrary randomness, which reminds you of the actions of an ancient and tempestuous god. But the undeniable and tangible manifestation was in full evidence at this show. A young, energetic, and deeply appreciative crowd showed up at The Danforth and what a show it was. Codeine was everything I needed it to be. And Duster was in tremendous form and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed itself. A fabulous night and a trip well worth making. p.s.
