Minister Schreiber not committing on ZEP yet, says the focus is on “getting it right”

New Home Affairs Minister, Dr Leon Schreiber, has not taken a position yet on the future of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit. He says he will focus on 'getting it right'. Recently, a Constitutional Court order dismissed his predecessor's bid to appeal the Gauteng High Court ruling that invalidated the decision to terminate the ZEP. The ZEP, which will expire in November 2025, allows approximately 178 000 Zimbabweans to live, work and study in South Africa. The ruling, which places the future of the ZEP squarely in the hands of Schreiber, affirms that any decision about the permit must be preceded by a rational, constitutionally fair process. Schreiber, from the Democratic Alliance, has told SABC News about his plans for Home Affairs, and the work ahead in addressing the country's migration challenges.
