This video describes the differences between Somatic Symptom Disorder, Factitious Disorder, and Malingering. Somatic Symptom Disorder is characterized by excessive worry about medical conditions and involves physical symptoms such as pain or fatigue. The symptoms are real and could include pain, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, vomiting, and muscle weakness. Factitious disorder is characterized by pretending to have symptoms to gain sympathy. Individuals with this disorder will usually agree to medical tests, even agreeing to invasive tests. They will go to extremes to appear ill. Malingering is not a mental health disorder, but rather a V Code, and it is similar to Factitious Disorder. Individuals who are malingering have something to gain from faking the symptoms and usually won’t submit to medical testing.
