Watching Scott Shiflett's bass playthrough of "Bent But Not Broken" by ‪@facetoface‬ quickly motivated me to go work on my picking chops, because this guy plays effortlessly when it comes to fast-picked lines, string skipping, and punchy bass fills. As you all know, I'm a sucker for a ripping bass intro, especially when it reprises constantly throughout the song. I talk about Scott's controlled wrist angle, how he lets the "weight" of his hand aid in executing those quick string-skips, his alternate picking "inside" two strings, and how his fills challenge the song's main pulse with a ton of intricate syncopation. I also discuss some unique songwriting elements I heard, including the "call and response" sections between the vocalist and the rest of the ensemble.
