OTTAWA, Ont. - Looking to start the 2022-23 OUA men's basketball season with a win, the Marauders were looking for a big game against one of the top programs in the east, the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Despite keeping things close early on, the Gee-Gees proved to be too much for the Marauders, as Ottawa defeated McMaster by a score of 97-67. The Marauders got on the board first and led early in the opening quarter, but Ottawa tied things up and took the lead to make the score 21-13 after the opening 10 minutes of play. After the first quarter, McMaster got their feet under them and took off from there, putting up 22 points in the second frame. At the halftime break, the Marauders trailed the Gee-Gees 47-35, needing a big second half to get back into the game. The second half wasn't kind to McMaster as the Marauders tried to hang tough with a strong Gee-Gees team. Putting up 32 points in the third quarter, Ottawa extended its lead to 79-48 after 30 minutes of play. Both teams played out the final 10 minutes but the gap was too much for the Marauders who were unable to mount a comeback, the victory going to the Gee-Gees. Mychael Paulo (Brampton, Ont.) led the Marauders with 20 points. McMaster made 40.7% of shots from the field while Ottawa went an impressive 39 of 70 for for a 55.7%. Turnovers proved to be the difference for the Gee-Gees who scored 25 points off 24 Marauder turnovers. Next Up McMaster will now regroup before facing the Carleton Ravens tomorrow at 8pm in Ottawa.
