As evidence of this, the discovery in the famous Pompeii of wine amphorae with the name of the village imprinted. During the medieval period Corniglia, like the neighboring villages, went through moments marked by ferocious and bloody land rivalries, and there was in that period the domination of both the counts of Lavagna and the Lords of Càrpena di Luni. It passed in 1254 from the dominion of Pope Innocent IV to that of Nicolò Fieschi who, however, in 1276, with the sale of the Castles of Càrpena in Genoa, gave up his power over this land and its inhabitants. Later Corniglia and the whole stretch of coast were under the dominion of the Republic of Genoa. In the 13th century the village was equipped with a castle, later the Genoese built a fortress there to defend themselves from frequent attacks by pirates, of which traces are still found in the upper part of the promontory. 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗘𝗿𝗮 In ancient times the town stretched much more towards the sea to the south, but frequent collapses of the cliffs have erased a good part of it forever, as in 1885 when the semicircular square of Santa Maria Maddalena collapsed. Corniglia emerged from isolation with the construction of the Genoa - La Spezia railway line (1874-1880), which was then doubled in 1926-28. The train is the most interesting way to get around in these areas, parking lots are often non-existent and paid, and the roads to get there are long and winding. It is very interesting to purchase the "Cinque Terre Train card" which allows free entry to the path (Via dell'Amore), the use of electric buses in the villages crossed, the Riomaggiore lift and access to the museum of Memory in Riomaggiore and of Sciachetrà in Manarola.
