MUSIC IN A COMA - HOW MUSIC SAVES COMA PATIENTS

Welcome to the MUSIC IS THERAPY SHOW where I talk with guests about their experience with Music as Therapy and/or discuss the latest in science and new developments in Music as a form of Therapy for people suffering from a wide range of dis-eases. From PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Physical, Psychological and Emotional Trauma, Grief and Loss... music not only offers relief, but combined with other therapies, can be Life Saving! If you or someone you love is feeling unhappy and in need of talking with someone... don't hesitate to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (USA) 1-800-273-8255 On today's MUSIC IS THERAPY SHOW, my guest host, Janice Lalla, and I talk with our guest and friend, Ron Kaluger, about his extraordinary experience with Music in a Coma! He shared his story with me about how his girlfriend played his favorite album for him to listen to while in a coma recovering from a head injury so serious doctors didn't know if he'd ever recover. We'll learn about his experience and share some research about how music works with the brain and recovery, as well as how music therapy can save lives! In brief, here are some of the ways music can affect the brain while in a coma... Brain activity Music can increase activity in the frontal, temporal, parietal, and subcortical regions of the brain, which may help with the recovery process. Music can also engage the whole brain, even when some areas are damaged. Emotional state Familiar music can trigger positive emotions and improve mental function by reactivating memories or increasing perceptual awareness. The emotional content of music can also activate the limbic and paralimbic structures, as well as the reward circuit, which can improve well-being. Evoke responses Music therapists sometimes use music to try to get responses from comatose patients. Songs that are familiar and meaningful to the patient can be especially effective. For example, one music therapist was able to get a patient to turn his head and body towards him, make eye contact, and respond to guitar music. Links to informative from today's show... and more...
