But it wasn't just leading men who took an interest in her. She won the affection of a President and even of one of the most notorious criminals in American history. She was also deeply embroiled in the 'Red Scare', was a hawk during World War II, an anti-war activist during Vietnam and had four marriages - which is perhaps how she perfected her role as a 'wife'.
