SEE THE GREEN FAIRIES: L'Absinthe (The Absinthe Drinker) by Edgar Degas

L'ABSINTHE (The Absinthe Drinker) by Edgar Degas, 1875–76, Oil on canvas, 92 cm × 68 cm (36.2 in × 26.8 in) THIS PAINTING IS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AS A HANDMADE OIL REPRODUCTION FROM FIRST ART GALLERY: https://www.1st-art-gallery.com/Edgar... ABOUT THIS PAINTING: The French called it Le Fee Vert, the green fairy. I’m referring to absinthe, a 19th century drink, popular among the artists, writers and Bohemians of Paris. Ernest Hemingway, Picasso, Van Gogh, Edgar Allan Poe, and Oscar Wilde among others, all partook of the drink. Made of botanicals and flavored with anise and fennel, it looked like an innocent liquor but packed a wallop like 100 proof whiskey. It developed the reputation of being a psychotic, which is why by 1915 was banned in America and most of Europe. Certainly depictions by various artists didn’t help. Patrons sitting dazed, crazy or stupefied, accompanied by the drink, hit directly at the drink’s esteem. This painting in particular, L’Absinthe by Edgar Degas attracted its share of criticism. It depicts a couple in a cafe. The woman sits with a glass of absinthe in front of her. She appears lost in her thoughts, sharing just the slightest Mona Lisa smile, that ambiguous smile somewhere between bemusement, irony, skepticism, and sadness. The woman is dressed very proper but a bit disheveled, in contrast to her partner, a rather gruff, scruffy, bearded man who attention is focused in another direction. They are an odd pair. The woman who modeled for the work was actress and model, Ellen Andrée, and the man, Marcellin Desboutin, a painter and print maker. At the time the work was blasted by critics characterizing the painting as uncouth, degrading, and a blow to morality. Of course with time comes perspective. Art critic, George Moore who originally proclaimed about the woman in the painting, “What a whore!,” later regretted his assessment stating, "the picture is merely a work of art, and has nothing to do with drink or sociology." Regardless of its reputation, absinthe it turns out is no more harmful than any liquor. And is again gaining popularity. ------------------------------------------------- #oilpaintings #edgardegas #arthistory #oilpainting #paintinganalysis Enjoy qualitative custom oil paintings, handmade portraits, and reproductions with 1st Art Gallery!
