MuseScore for Panicked Classical Musicians

One of the questions I get all the time is “what music notation software should I use?” It’s a difficult question, because they all have their strengths and weaknesses. MuseScore has a unique advantage: it’s completely FREE. This makes it a phenomenal starting point for musicians who are new to notation apps. Through the corny framing device of “rehearsal is in thirty minutes!!” we are going to run through a step-by-step method for inputting your score with minimum hassle. For brevity, we’ll be skipping things that aren’t necessary, like how to enter notes with your mouse (the slowest method...) and how to use the Inspector (useful only if you love nitty-gritty details). We will do four separate passes, where we laser-focus on different elements of the score: -First Pass: notes, rests & reference points (tempos, key signatures, repeats, etc.) -Second Pass: articulations & slurs -Third Pass: dynamics, techniques & expressions -Final Pass: transposing, editing & basic formatting I include a handy chart at the end of each section so you can refer back to it as you get the hang of the keyboard shortcuts. Small disclaimer: I am not affiliated with MuseScore! Just a big fan of the hard work the community and the talented dev team put into it. If you’ve used older versions of the software, I definitely suggest you check out the latest version 3.6 - it’s a game-changer.
