Here's What the Las Vegas Strip Looks Like Now. What Happened??

Las Vegas is not the same anymore. The blame goes all around. Aww Las Vegas. An overhyped kinda crummy place in the middle of the desert. No that’s mean. It’s not that bad. At least along the strip. You could find plenty of things to do for a weekend here, and if you want to spend a lot of money you can feel like you’re on a real vacation. Or, if you want to go cheap, you could do that too. But this isn’t a what to do in Vegas video. It’s a here’s what Vegas looks like video. For this drive, we’re going to see two areas - the main strip where almost all of the hotels are, and a really super rundown dangerous area just off the strip. I think it will be enlightening. The day was bright and sunny as it is here most of the time. It was about 80’ right before the sun set in late October of 2021. Now we’re here because Las Vegas is not only a major tourist destination but also one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Vegas has grown by more than 14% in the last ten years and was actually in the top three for fastest growing cities in the country of late. There’s a lot of people fleeing here from California, especially Southern California. They want a cheaper lifestyle and are sick of the politics in California. However, Las Vegas isn’t all neon rainbows. Sure, the strip is nice, and there are great, really expensive communities on the fringes of the metro area. That’s something I’ve covered in other videos. But surrounding all the fancy hotels, for the most part are long stretches of rundown strip malls and neglected neighborhoods. A lot of it looks like the bad side of Los Angeles. Kinda. Sorta. It’s pretty clear the Raiders are perfect for this place cause most of the city is trashed and rundown and full of crime. The strip really took off in the 1990s that’s when all the over the top casinos and hotels went in. Back then, it was really impressive. Sure, there are still super nice places on the strip where things have remained elegant and new and awe inspiring. But I found since the last time I wandered the strip, that many of the hotels had lost their charm. A lot of them are close to 30 years old now, and the wear shows. And of course, the less nice a hotel slash casino gets the more riff raff hangs around. I mean I saw two near fistfights in my hotel while checking in and here’s how bad my room looked at the Excalibur. Certainly not impressive. Perhaps that’s because I’m frugal. But for the most part, the strip is still holding on. It just seems to be a little tired. Like a middle aged dad. The Vegas strip first began in 1941 with the opening of the El Rancho Vegas resort. Over time, more and more hotel slash casinos have opened up here. Today, there are 33 hotels on this 4 mile stretch of road, known as Las Vegas Boulevard. The strip is usually defined as the area of road between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road. These hotels are REALLY big, which is why there are only 33 on both sides of this road over a 4 mile stretch. Some of these hotel footprints are a half mile long. In fact, half of the world’s 20 largest hotels are here on this street. The Vegas strip is actually not within the city of Las Vegas technically. It’s within Clark County. 40 million people visit this city every year, and there are 22,000 conventions held. Las Vegas is also considered the brightest place on the planet because of all the lights. And, you are probably not surprised to hear, there are 300 weddings in Las Vegas every single day. That’s the most in the world outside of Istanbul, Turkey.
