I am also a scientist in my day job so this kind of thing fascinates me. So the rabbit hole I've been down this week is all about musk. Musk is something I used to take for granted in fragrance, I just didn't even notice it, that was just how perfume was. Having tried more and more fragrances, I have realised just how different musk can smell in different perfumes and just how much I enjoy the fluffy, comforting, powdery sweet, floral, fruity musks. But those are only a few facets of musk, there are many more! Here I take you through some of the evolutionary reasons why I think we may be preprogrammed to love musk, I talk about where musk was originally sourced from, the issues surrounding musks and where musks come from now. I also discuss why musk is so important in perfumery and the most common modern musks that you may have come across in your favourite perfume without even realising... Finally I ponder why musk is no longer presented with its animalic facet in most modern fragrances on the designer market and point to some particular examples where musk is still quite raw and carnal smelling, should you want to experience the darker, dirtier side... We also hear a personal experience of musk from my very special guest star, ‪@scentedsnowdrops‬. Yes this is my first collab. and I am honoured, and it was totally unplanned (can you tell?! 😂).
