UPDATE (May 24, 2022) Shirley has made 30 trips back to Lewisporte since 9/11 and 363 student scholarships have been awarded. On September 11, 2001, 38 planes were diverted to the Island of Newfoundland. Shirley Brooks-Jones, a retired Ohio State University administrator, was on one of those planes and describes how the tiny town of Lewisporte treated them like family. In appreciation for their kindness, Shirley started a scholarship fund to help students in that area go to universities and trade schools.
