The key to be a great manager. Put yourself in your team's shoes and leading with empathy.

One of the things that I see new managers struggle with is emotional intelligence and the ability to recognise and understand and manage their own emotions as well as the emotions of others. Without this, it can directly impact how you lead a team, how you communicate with them, how you build relationships. Ultimately, they're affecting the team's progress, the team's ability to achieve goals and then that leads to a demotivated team that soon look for jobs elsewhere and leave. One of the things that you can do to improve your emotional intelligence is work on your own self-awareness. Becoming self-aware allows you to recognise patterns in your own behaviour, identify emotional triggers and understand how your mood can influence the team's dynamics. Over time, the self-reflection can help you create a better work environment because you'll understand what you're lacking, where your pain points are, how you react to different things. Then you'll start to look for more diverse perspective on things that will allow you to make better and more informed decisions. The next is empathy. So developing empathy is about more than understanding others' feelings. It's about genuinely connecting with your team members by seeing things from their perspective. Like you literally picking yourself up and putting yourself in their shoes. Active listening to hear what they have to say. So like pay close attention, look for nonverbal clues such as body language and tone. And when team members share their thoughts and concerns, respond with open-ended questions that encourage them to express themselves even more. This approach will help you understand them more and demonstrate that you're genuinely interested in what's being said and their well-being. This will help you build more trust and strengthen relationships within your team too. The next one is looking at your responses. So managing your responses, looking at how you go from stressful or emotionally charged situations is key to maintaining your composure and setting a positive example for your team. Take steps to center yourself before reacting. Have a brief pause, allow yourself time to assess the situation objectively and choose a response that's constructive rather than reactive. Practice techniques, whatever that be, whether that be mindfulness, breathing, writing down, whatever it be, just try and stay calm and focused to ensure that your responses are thoughtful and they contribute to the solution rather than just escalating tensions. If you can improve your emotional intelligence, it will allow you to effectively lead the team in a much better way. ____ Avoid rookie mistakes, fast-track your way to effective team management, and become a confident leader. 😣Sinking in management quicksand?
