Although it was published in 1888, I think this Gymnopedie really transcended its era - still one of the most recognised pieces of classical music out there, its simplicity is timeless, and of course it has been adapted and covered regularly by all kinds of artists across the musical spectrum (my first experience of the piece was as a child listening the version on the 1979 Sky album, featuring John Williams, on my parents record player!). The simplicity of building a whole piece around two initial chords is equally maddening and intriguing. While preparing to record and film this, I had this thought about the piece: it sounds as though, when you reach the end, you could start again from the beginning and let the piece continue to play, forever. And what if the piece was always playing, somewhere, by someone...? A never ending cycle, always returning to Gmaj7, Dmaj7...
