Adventure game playlist:    • Adventure game playthroughs   This is a recorded playthrough of a first-person adventure game developed by Sierra and released in 1996. It was very clearly designed to compete with Myst, as the atmosphere and world design of Lighthouse resembles Myst in many ways. In fact, according to the lead designer Jon Bock, Ken Williams (president of Sierra at the time) called Bock into his office one day, took out a copy of Myst, and asked him "Can you do this?". Bock said yes, and development began. Probably the biggest strength of Lighthouse is its visuals. It has some beautiful environments, oozing with pre-rendered 90's charm. Unfortunately, the puzzles don't hold up as well. Many of them are pretty obtuse, and it is sometimes possible to lock yourself into unwinnable "walking dead" situations if you don't do some things in the correct order. So, in other words, classic Sierra game design. Overall, though, Lighthouse has a lot of charm to it. Even with the frequent crashing (which I experienced throughout all versions of the game I attempted to play, including third-party versions designed specifically to run on modern machines) I still can't help but love the detailed world and visuals. I recommend giving this one a shot (although maybe with a walkthrough by your side just in case).
