A live performance from Pictish Trail, as part of the Hidden Door Live series of live shows, performances and interviews. This very special set from December 2020 came to us straight from Isle of Eigg. ABOUT PICTISH TRAIL Throughout his career Pictish Trail has resolutely furrowed his own path, steadily creating a unique catalogue of recordings and performances, while eschewing the blueprint of the predictable singer-songwriter in favour of something untidily intriguing. This year saw the release of his new album, Thumb World. Bold, weird, wild, wired, sonically luxurious yet never losing touch with its DIY-‘til-I-die roots, Thumb World is a voyage to the outer rings of Pictish Trail’s mind at its darkest, funniest and most inventive – a plugged-in, fuzzed-out, fucked-up contemplation on, as he puts it, “life repeating and gradually degrading, the inevitable cyclical nature of things, and the sense of there ultimately being no escape”. When not putting out his own music as Pictish Trail, Johnny Lynch is a fulcrum of the British independent music community. Through his label Lost Map Records, he champions a diverse and idiosyncratic array of extraordinary talent and has helped to elevate the likes of Rozi Plain, Seamus Fogarty, Bas Jan, Callum Easter and Free Love. Pictish Trail’s critically acclaimed first pair of albums, Secret Soundz Vol.1&2, were gloriously eclectic slices of lo-fi folk-pop, later revived as a deluxe double-vinyl in 2014 by Moshi Moshi. His third album Future Echoes was released to further acclaim in September 2016, and went on to win the public vote at the Scottish Album of the Year Awards in 2017. ABOUT HIDDEN DOOR LIVE We have handed over the reins to artists, musicians and dancers to enable their ideas in creating unique and immersive online events. Each project sees the guest-curator take control of Hidden Door’s social media for a look behind the scenes as the work takes shape, culminating in a live show. The project has received funding from Creative Scotland and The National Lottery’s Open Fund: Sustaining Creative Development Programme, allowing every participant to be paid fairly for their contribution to the shows. Through organising temporary events Hidden Door works to showcase new work and create engaging environments for the public to experience, explore and discover. Hidden Door is a volunteer-run charity, with our work funded through ticket sales, sponsorship and fundraising.
