Lake Turkana, One Of The Largest Lakes Of Africa, Situated Between The Countries Of Kenya And Ethiopia. Lake Turkana Is A Part Of The African Great Lakes, A Series Of Large And Small Freshwater Lakes, That Spans Across The East African Rift Valley System In Eastern Africa. African Great Lakes Consist Of Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, Malawi, Turkana, Albert ,edward , Kivu , Mweru And Several Other Small Lakes.lake Turkana Covers Approximately 6,405 Square Kilometers In Total Surface Area , The Majority Of The Lake Is Situated In Kenya, While A Small Portion Of Lake Turkana Extends Into Southern Ethiopia. Lake Turkana Is Africa’s 4th Largest Lake By Surface Area After Lake Victoria, Tanganyika And Malawi And Is The World’s Largest Permanent Desert Lake. With A Total Water Volume Of 203.6 Cubic Kilometres, It Is The World’s 4th Largest Salt Lake By Volume. Lake Turkana Was Initially Named As Lake Rudolf, By The Hungarian Explorer Sámuel Teleki And His Austrian Partner Ludwig Von Höhnel, Who Were The First Europeans To Record The Existence Of The Lake In 1888. They Named The Lake After Rudolf, Then Crown Prince Of Austria-Hungarian Empire . In 1975 However, After Kenyan Government Changed The Name Of The Lake , The Lake Was Renamed As Lake Turkana After One Of The Predominant Native Tribe Living On Its Shores. Lake Turkana Is A Saline Lake And Is Known For Its High Alkalinity. It Is Roughly 290 Kilometers Long, And Has An Average Width Of 32 Kilometers , The Lake Is Relatively A Shallow Water Body, With An Average Depth Of Only 30 Meters And A Maximum Depth Of 109 Meters. The Lake Has An Total Shoreline Of 820 Kilometers. Several Rivers Feed Into Lake Turkana, Most Important Of Them Are The Omo River, The Turkwel River And The Kerio River.
