I played this piece for the first time when I was a teenager studying classical saxophone at the conservatory. I was immediately captured by the lushness of the melody and the flowing of the harmonic structure. This song was composed in 1982, the same year I was born. It is a milonga, like a slow tango. Incredibly sensual to watch dancers perform with this music. Astor Piazzolla has been one of my favorite musicians of all time, combining great musical skill with passion. He was able to produce music that is both challenging but never too intellectual and at the same time full of passion and transport. He started the "new tango" movement, being tango containing jazz and world music elements. "Oblivion" is about the end of a love story, because one of the lovers has to go away by boat.
