Robert E. Lee. Days earlier, board member Connie Bernard defended Lee falsely claiming that he was responsible for freeing enslaved people. Bernard was caught shopping on her laptop during the hearing. Robert E. Lee owned 189 enslaved people and fought in court to indefinitely postpone their emancipation, which the courts denied.
