So, what are the side buckles really for? They really are there just to tighten up the hip / butt area for those that need it. Do not get these confused with traditional kilt straps and buckles. Those will adjust the fit of the kilt on the waist. For a utility style kilt with straps, they typically just adjust the hip area with snaps on the waist band to adjust for fitment in the waist. Several of my kilts have them and I typically do not do them up unless needed. While they do have a limited function, these buckles and straps are mostly for looks. Many like them as they give a more traditional feel to an otherwise modern or utilitarian look. So be sure to measure before you purchase your utility kilt as these straps will not help you if you order the wrong size.
