The Dig Dutty, sometimes called Matikor or Haldi, ceremony marks the official start of rituals for a Hindu wedding. As we continue a special series called Discover Guyana, we delve into the intricacies and deep meaning behind the ceremony. As we will learn, the ceremony is different depending on which branch of Hinduism is practiced by the families of the bride and the groom - but what never differs is the use of turmeric on the bodies of the couple and the raucous fun of the evening! Our Indian ancestors brought Hinduism to Guyana from India, where practices vary depending on where you’re from. Our ancestors came mainly from North India with smaller batches coming from the Madras (Chennai) Presidency and South India. As such Hindu weddings in Guyana may have different practices according to the denomination and traditions passed down from ancestors and melded with Guyanese and pop culture.
