A US congressional hearing almost degenerated into violence when an Oklahoma senator challenged a union boss to a fight, while in a separate incident a Republican congressman accused another of elbowing him in the kidneys. Bernie Sanders, the veteran US senator, who was chairing a meeting, was forced to intervene as Markwayne Mullin, a Republican congressman from Oklahoma, suggested that he and Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, settle a long-standing grudge right there in the room. “This is the time, this is the place,” Mullin, 46, told O’Brien, 51, after reading a series of demeaning tweets the union boss had posted about him in the past.
