Skyrim - Review | A Mile Wide and An Inch Deep

A review/critique/retrospective/analysis of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, an open-world RPG with unprecedented heights and a vast, expansive world that ultimately feels far shallower than its epic landscape and grandiose mountain ranges would suggest. It's not a bad game, but feels lacking in many important aspects that I usually find most appealing about open-world RPGs, which makes the overall experience merely "average" with occasional spikes of brilliance. This review is based on the plain, "Vanilla" version with no DLC and only minimal quality-of-life mods installed like SkyUI and Amazing Follower Tweaks, among a few other cosmetic ones. Note that those mods do not alter the vanilla gameplay experience in any significant way, and that I played for about 10 hours before installing any mods at all. I originally reviewed Skyrim on my blog back in February 2012, shortly after the game first came out, and had many of the same criticisms and conclusions to make about it then as I did now, though some of my opinions have changed slightly with the benefit of extra time and a subsequent replay.
