Mic Test #1 - Recording a Kawai Grand Piano with ZOOM H4n.

[ ** Please use headphones! ** ] - This is #1 of a little serie of short, totally free (and almost chatting) improvisations I made as tests in recording a 3/4 Grand Piano from K.Kawai. The microphone used is the H4n digital recorder from ZOOM Corporation. In every single test of the serie the piano lid is fully open and the microphone is standing fixed exactly at the same position on a mic stand, suspended at 145 cm from ground, facing the sound board at distance of about 110-120 cm from strings, with head sligthly inclined to look towards the centre of the string set. Recording settings for Mic Test #1: - Mode: Stereo (XY) - Recording angle: 90 degrees - REC-Level: 60 - No low-cut filters used - Acquisition format: WAV, 48 kHz / 24 bit - Ambience: living room of a city house, no specific insulation. Note: I tried playing in a wide range of different styles during each one of the improvisations, in order to verify the mic response to various dynamics: the Piano and Forte, the Legato and Staccato, Chords and separate lines, the use of the two main pedals: the damper pedal (sustain) and the "una corda" pedal, Bass sounds and Treble sounds, etc... I usually started the improvisation at full sound, to end it with a section costantly holding pressed the "una corda" pedal (or just the reverse!). I let in the audio file all the noises I made before and after the improvisation: paces on the wooden parquet, switching of the mic, opening the piano and so. [ ** Per favore usate le cuffie! ** ] - Questa è la #1 di una serie di piccole, totalmente libere (e quasi chiacchieranti) improvvisazioni che ho eseguito come test di registrazione di un Pianoforte Tre Quarti Coda della K.Kawai. Il microfono utilizzato è il registratore digitale H4n della Corporazione ZOOM. In ogni singolo test della serie il coperchio del pianoforte è aperto al massimo ed il microfono si trova fissato esattamente alla medesima posizione su di un supporto microfonico, sopseso a 145 cm dal pavimento, affacciato alla cassa armonica a una distanza di circa 110-120 cm dalle corde, con la testa lievemente inclinata per guardare verso il centro del sistema di corde. Impostazioni di registrazione per il Test Microfono #1: - Modalità: Stereo (XY) - Angolo di apertura: 90 gradi - REC-Level: 60 - Nessun filtro passa-alto impiegato - Formato di acquisizione: WAV, 48 kHz / 24 bit - Ambiente: soggiorno di una casa in città, nessun isolamento specifico. Nota: Ho provato a suonare in un'ampia gamma di stili differenti durante ognuna delle improvvisazioni, in modo da verificare la risposta del microfono a svariate dinamiche: il Piano e il Forte, il Legato e lo Staccato, Accordi e linee separate, l'uso dei due principali pedali: il pedale d risonanza ed il pedale una corda, suoni Bassi e suoni Acuti, etc... Di solito ho cominciato l'improvvisazione a suono pieno, per finire con una sezione in cui mantenevo costantemente premuto il pedale una corda (oppure il contrario!). Ho lasciato nel file audio tutti i rumori che ho fatto prima e dopo l'improvvisazione: passi sul parquet di legno, l'accensione e spegnimento del microfono, l'apertura del pianoforte e così via.
